Review

Wow. When I first saw the trailer for Weapons, I was intrigued and excited — but the actual film turned out to be something completely different from what I expected, in the best possible way. This isn’t just another horror thriller; it’s a bold, original work that felt like nothing else I’ve seen this year.

It carries the unsettling DNA of Barbarian, but also feels like a respectful homage to other greats — films like Prisoners or The Shining came to mind. Still, Weapons maintains a voice of its own. The storytelling is incredibly fresh and engaging, with each character introduced through a distinct chapter that slowly pulls you deeper into the core mystery. That layered, time-jumping structure is what makes the experience so satisfying — it keeps unfolding, keeps revealing.

I had high hopes going in, but this film surpassed them. It was more creative, more unexpected, and ultimately more fulfilling than I imagined. I watched it in Dolby Cinema, and I can’t recommend that enough. The sound design and soundtrack are phenomenal — one of the film’s strongest weapons, if you will.

There’s news that Cregger’s next project will be a Resident Evil reboot, and after seeing Weapons, I honestly can’t wait to see what he does with that franchise. So far, this is my favorite film of 2025. It may not have the budget of a summer blockbuster, but it proves that bold, original storytelling still has the power to thrill — and hopefully reshape—the future of cinema.
